Diurnal/semidiurnal polar motion excited by oceanic tidal angular momentum

چکیده
The axial component of the oceanic tidal angular momentum (OTAM) has been demonstrated tobe responsible for most of the diurnal and semidiurnal variations in Earth's rotational rate. In this paper we study the equatorial components of OTAM and their corresponding effects on the orientation of Earth's rotational axis, or polar motion. Three ocean tide models derived from TOPEX/Poseidon satellite altimetry are employed to predict the polar motion excited by eight major diurnal/semidiurnal tides (Q1, O1, P1, K1, N2, M2, $2, K2). The predictions are compared with geodetic measurements of polar motion from both long-term observations and during the intensive campaign Cont94. The prograde diurnal and prograde and retrograde semidiurnal periods are treated, whereas the retrograde diurnal polar motion is not treated (because it cannot be observed irectly and uniquely.) The comparison shows generally good agreement, with discrepancies typically within 10-30 micro-arcseconds for the largest ides. The eight fides collectively explain nearly 60% of the total variance in subdaily polar motion during Cont94. This establishes the dominant role of OTAM in exciting the diurnal/semidiurnal polar motion and paves the way for detailed studies of short-period nontidal polar motion. The present accuracy, however, is inadequate to shed light on the prograde diurnal polar libration.

Diurnal / semidiurnal oceanic tidal angular momentum : Topex / Poseidon models in comparison with Earth ' s rotation rate
The oceanic tidal angular momentum (OTAM) has been demonstrated to be the primary cause for the diurnal and semidiurnal variations in the Earth's rotational rate, or AUT1. Three ocean tide models derived from the Topex/Poseidon altimetry mission are employed to yield predictions of AUT1 for eight major diurnal/semidiurnal fides. The predictions are compared with geodetic determinations ofAUT1 f...
متن کاملOceanic tidal angular momentum and Earth's rotation variations
Luni-solar tides affect Earth's rotation in a variety of ways. We give an overview of the physics and focus on the excitation of Earth rotational variations by ocean tides under the conservation of angular momentum. Various models for diurnal and semidiurnal tidal height and tidal current fields have been derived, following a legacy of a number of theoretical tide models, from the Topex/Poseido...
متن کاملHigh Frequency Variations of Earth Rotation Parameters from GPS and GLONASS Observations
The Earth's rotation undergoes changes with the influence of geophysical factors, such as Earth's surface fluid mass redistribution of the atmosphere, ocean and hydrology. However, variations of Earth Rotation Parameters (ERP) are still not well understood, particularly the short-period variations (e.g., diurnal and semi-diurnal variations) and their causes. In this paper, the hourly time serie...
متن کاملDiurnal and Semidiurnal Variations in the Earth's Rotation Rate Induced by Oceanic Tides.
Recent space-geodetic observations have revealed daily and subdaily variations in the Earth's rotation rate. Although spectral analysis suggests that the variations are primarily of tidal origin, comparisons to previous theoretical predictions based on various ocean models have been less than satisfactory. This disagreement is partly caused by deficiencies in physical modeling. Rotation predict...
متن کاملAxial near - Symmetry , Angular Momentum , and Polar Excitation
The mechanism of the excitation of the Earth's polar instability in the absence of external torques is explored. The conventional perturbation scheme used to simplify the Liouville equation has oversimplified the excitation physics. The Earth becomes axially near-symmetrical and slightly triaxial during polar excitation, which induces additional change in the moment of inertia. Polar excitation...
